Hair and constructions of identity are often deeply intertwined. Influenced by the intersections of African hair, femininity and personal identity, “Scalp Deep” captures the struggles of a young African woman as she navigates the reactions and expectations of others after she decides to commit to a new look.
Director Biography – Naseeba Bagalaaliwo
Naseeba is an emerging filmmaker from Uganda. Scalp Deep is her first animated short film, and was made with the support of a grant from the Goethe-Zentrum in Uganda. Naseeba is passionate about representation in media and telling impactful yet entertaining stories that don’t shy away from the unique experiences and struggles of women. She is currently in the process of creating a platform for female and nonbinary African filmmakers in Uganda called, Kelele. Her biggest dreams include starting her own production company and working as a producer for television. Naseeba is a graduate of Durham University and the Africa Kommt! Fellowship for Young Leaders from sub-Saharan Africa.
